Metropolitan John of Dubna (Archdiocese of the Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe – Moscow Patriarchate) sent the following open letter to Patriarch Cyril of Moscow this morning:

“The Archbishop

Paris, 09 March 2022

Your Holiness,

In these dark days when war is raging in the middle of Europe following the military intervention of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, allow me to express the consternation of the entire Archdiocese and our total solidarity with the victims of this conflict.

The turmoil and disarray caused throughout the world by this violent attack has not spared the Western European Orthodox community, and in particular the Archdiocese of the Russian Orthodox Parishes of Western Europe, which brings together the faithful of all origins. Our very unity is threatened by the situation that has been created. Our faithful expect their pastors to carry the voice of the Church and the Gospel message of peace.

We have learned with emotion of the appeal addressed to you by the members of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, asking you to intervene with the political authorities of the Russian Federation to put an end to this bloodbath.

In the name of all the faithful of our Archdiocese, I turn to you to raise your voice as Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church against this monstrous and senseless war and to intercede with the authorities of the Russian Federation to put an end to this murderous conflict as soon as possible, which until recently seemed unthinkable between two peoples and two nations united by centuries of history and their common faith in Christ.

Your Holiness, in your “homily” for Forgiveness Sunday, delivered in the Patriarchal Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on 6 March, you suggest that you justify this cruel and murderous war of aggression as “a metaphysical struggle”, in the name of “the right to stand on the side of the light, on the side of God’s truth, on the side of what is revealed to us by the light of Christ, by his word, by his Gospel…”.

With all due respect, from which I do not withdraw, but also with infinite pain, I must bring to your attention that I cannot subscribe to such a reading of the Gospel. Nothing can ever justify that the “good shepherds” that we must be cease to be “peacemakers”, whatever the circumstances.

Your Holiness, humbly, with a heavy heart, I beg you to do all you can to bring an end to this appalling war that divides the world and sows death and destruction.

“Parigi, 9 Marzo 2022

Sua Santità,

In questi giorni bui, mentre la guerra imperversa nel mezzo dell’Europa a seguito dell’intervento militare della Federazione Russa in Ucraina, mi permetta di esprimere la costernazione dell’intera Arcidiocesi e la nostra totale solidarietà alle vittime del conflitto .

 Il tumulto e il disordine causati in tutto il mondo da questo violento attacco non ha risparmiato la comunità ortodossa dell’Europa occidentale e in particolare le parrocchie ortodosse russe dell’Europa occidentale, che unisce i fedeli di tutte le origini . La nostra unità è minacciata dalla situazione che è stata creata. I nostri fedeli esigono che i loro sacerdoti si facciano portavoce della Chiesa e portino un messaggio di pace.

Abbiamo appreso con emozione dell’appello indirizzato a lei dai membri del Sacro Sinodo della Chiesa Ortodossa Ucraina, che le chiedono di intervenire con le autorità politiche della Federazione Russa per mettere fine al bagno di sangue.

 Nel nome di tutti i fedeli della nostra Arcidiocesi, mi rivolgo a lei affinché si sollevi come Primate  della Chiesa Russa Ortodossa contro questa mostruosa e insensata guerra e interceda con le autorità della Federazione russa per mettere fine il prima possibile a questo conflitto omicida che fino a poco tempo fa sembrava impensabile tra due popoli e due nazioni unite per secoli di storia e fede comune in Cristo.

Sua Santità, nella sua omelia per il perdono della domenica, fatta nella cattedrale patriarcale del Cristo Salvatore il 6 marzo, lei sostiene di giustificare questa crudele e omicida guerra di aggressione come “una lotta metafisica”, nel nome del diritto di stare dalla parte della luce, della verità di Dio, dalla parte di ciò che ci è rivelato dalla luce di Cristo, dalle Sue parole, dal Suo Vangelo…”

 Con tutto il rispetto, che confermo, ma anche con infinito dolore, le devo fare presente che non posso condividere tale lettura del Vangelo. Niente può mai giustificare che noi buoni pastori cessiamo di essere mantenitori della pace a prescindere dalle circostanze.

Sua Santità, umilmente, con il cuore triste, la prego di fare tutto il possibile per far terminare questa terribile guerra che divide il mondo e semina morte e distruzione.
